ABOUT THIS SESSION:
The goal of this introspective session is for participants to think about diversity and equity through a more expansive lens. The presenter will review common terms used in schools, classrooms and organizations and how these terms relate to our behaviors. The session will also review things to consider when working with staff and students, and personal stories related to these topics will be shared. Participants will be asked to participate in individual, small and large group activities throughout the presentation.
SPEAKER BIO:
Robert B. Jamison currently serves as a coordinator of school counseling services for a large suburban school division and has years of experience as a school counselor and school counseling department chair. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Virginia as well as his Master of Science in Education in School Counseling and his Education Specialist degrees from Old Dominion University. Mr. Jamison has also supported school counselors and educators as a member of the Board of Directors for a state school counselor association; and, he served on a state commission for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Robert is also the co-author of the book 15-Minute Focus: Diversity, Bias, and Privilege: Addressing Racial Inequities to Create Inclusive Learning Environments.

With recent acts of racism and discrimination occurring in our country, school counselors have found themselves looking for ways to intentionally engage with students of all backgrounds and to promote racial and social justice in their schools. School counselors play a pivotal role in helping students learn about and feel affirmed in their identities and understand differences and biases. In order to create a school environment that is truly inclusive for all students, counselors need awareness of how systemic and interpersonal racism, discrimination and hate appears. Utilizing the ASCA model through an equity lens can be a tool to improve school climate. In this interactive session, educators will:

Derek Francis is a father, son, brother and life long resident of the Twin Cities who serves as the Executive Director of Equity and School Climate for Minneapolis Public Schools and Professional Development Specialist for Hatching Results. As a school counselor at North High in Minneapolis, Derek was a part of a staff that increased graduation over 40% in a four year span. As the topic of race, hate and bias topics emerge in education, Derek began creating strategies to help educators grow in their skillset of discussing race and identity in school. Derek specializes in helping students and staff build trusting cross cultural relationships. Derek has delivered over 30 keynote presentations and sessions at school counselors conferences including the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and American Counseling Association. Derek’s published work includes contributing chapter to Antiracist School Counseling In Schools and the Communities by Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy. Derek’s passion is to promote unity and healing through authentic cross cultural relationships.

Priscilla Grijalva has been a school counselor for 17.5 years where she has experience working at the middle and high school level. She led her current middle school to its first RAMP recognition and was the first middle school to earn the recognition in her current district. She led her former school district to five national recognitions by Former First Lady Michelle Obama for Reach Higher and Voter Registration efforts. She has served as a University Adjunct Instructor, University of California Application Reader, TN Achieves Mentor, High School Basketball Coach, and hosts the educational podcast Reach Higher Riverside. Priscilla has experience in developing and implementing comprehensive data-driven school counseling programs. She serves on local, state, and national school counselor committees to have a voice in the decisions that affect students. She was featured in Forbes 2X for her work with Reach Higher and was recognized by the U.S. Air Force as a Distinguished Educator. Priscilla has presented at several state and national conferences. Priscilla was named the 2022 National Life Changer of the Year. She is a champion for students in assisting them to reach for higher education or training through financial aid.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:
It is estimated that more than 5.6 million US children are bereaved. More than 200,000 children have lost parents or caregivers to COVID19 alone. 1 in 11 children in Indiana will experience the death of a parent or caregiver by the age of 18. Such loss can destroy a child’s sense of safety, upend any sense of normalcy, and completely reconfigure their understanding of the world. As school counselors, how are we serving our grieving youth? Participants will dive deeper into understanding grief and all its complications in today’s world. Through an overview of new and former grief work theories, participants will be able to better understand the needs of the bereaved, while examining the societal stigmas and barriers many grievers experience. Discussion topics will include: appropriate grief terminology, secondary losses, suicide loss, Prolonged Grief Disorder (DSM-V-TR), and the complications of death due to COVID19. Participants will leave with resources and tools to support their students in both small group and individual settings.
SPEAKER BIO:
Gen Nelson is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in grief work, adjunct counseling faculty at Missouri State University, and ASCA’s on-site trainer for grief & loss. Previously, Gen worked as both a school counselor for nine years and a grief counselor for six years in the group and individual settings at Lost & Found Grief Center, including one year as their program director. She served on the ASCA Board of Directors, and as assistant chair for the Missouri School Counselor Association’s Board of Directors. She has provided numerous presentations for school counselors, at both the state and national levels, on how to work effectively with grieving students and their families.
