SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Joe Johnson is a highly regarded educator and international speaker on unleashing your purpose and social justice. He has worked with dozens of educational and corporate organizations in the United States like Toyota, FedEx, United Negro College Fund and many school districts; helping to transform culture, enhance diversity, and student/professional development.
With a PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Florida, Dr. Joe’s versatility has allowed him to gain over 20 years of experience in transformation work. His insights have been seen on many national platforms like NBC, VH1, and several other media outlets. As the author of the books, “Pursue Your Purpose Not Your Dreams,” and “The College Kids,” which is the only bilingual book in the country about college for elementary students, Dr. Joe continues to transform the lives of individuals and take organizations to their next level by helping them to Think, Act, and Live with purpose and intention.

School counselors are uniquely qualified to address the mental health needs of students, yet often struggle to showcase the impact of their programs. Join ASCA School Counselor of the Year, Meredith Draughn, as she shares strategies for elevating the visibility of school counselor success and promoting positive outcomes for students. Attendees will leave with practical tools for advocacy and showcasing program impact, unlocking opportunities for professional growth and systemic change.
Meredith will also be presenting two breakout sessions.
SPEAKER BIO:
Meredith Draughn is the 2023 American School Counseling Association’s School Counselor of the Year. She was previously selected as North Carolina’s 2021-2022 School Counselor of the Year. She has 9 years of experience at both the elementary, middle and high school levels. She received her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University in Health and Exercise Science and her master’s degree from Appalachian State University in Professional School Counseling. Meredith is a National Board Certified School Counselor and is an ASCA School Counseling Leadership Specialist; Mental Health Specialist; Anxiety & Stress Management Specialist; Cultural Competency Specialist; and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialist. She is currently the sole school counselor at B. Everett Jordan Elementary School, which earned RAMP (Recognized ASCA Model Program) recognition in 2021.

Please Note: If we are forced to cancel the MSCA Conference because of a “force majeure” event, such as a government restriction on large gatherings that cover the intended size of the conference, then we will issue full refunds of the registrations. Otherwise, our normal cancellation policy will be upheld: There will be no refunds after October 14, 2023. All cancellations before October 14, 2023 will be refunded less a $25 handling fee. The association is not responsible for and cannot give refunds due to problems beyond its control, such as weather and school closings.
On social distancing and other health and safety measures, the regulations/guidelines that apply to hotels and conference centers may change. The MSCA Conference will conform to all necessary regulations/guidelines that are in place as of the date of the conference.

Located in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo, you will find tons to do with your free time. Adjacent to the hotel is the Kalamazoo Mall, the first outdoor pedestrian mall in the United States. The Mall features revitalized Art Deco buildings, specialty shops, chic restaurants, unique coffee shops and lively brewpubs. You can also visit one of the many museums downtown, such the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts or the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. A short walk from the hotel is Bronson Park, sometimes referred to as Kalamazoo’s “front porch,” where you can enjoy the outdoors amidst the concrete jungle. There is tons to do around Kalamazoo, so you can learn and play!
