The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science is Kentucky’s first residential 2-year STEM program for gifted and talented juniors and seniors. Established in 2007, students enroll as juniors and are full-time WKU students pursuing their interests in advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematical careers, all while receiving a full scholarship for their housing, tuition, and meals.

Opening Keynote Session

“Maslow Before Bloom” is a hashtag that Dr. Bryan Pearlman has been using for years on social media. It is also the title of his second book, released in May 2020. In this engaging and interactive presentation, Dr. Pearlman shares his own personal struggles as a student and his successes as a teacher, school administrator, and now as a mental health therapist. He infuses many real-world case studies, stories, strategies, evidence-based practices, and out of the box ideas for helping all students (and staff) to be successful in school and life. Dr. Pearlman’s message will make participants laugh, cry, and feel.
Dr. Bryan Pearlman is a former school administrator, a mental health therapist, PD leader, keynote speaker, and adjunct professor of education psychology. He is the author of three books: Maslow Before Bloom: Basic Human Needs Before Academics, Whatever It Takes For All Students To Succeed In School and Life, and From Struggles To Successes: A Handbook For Parents & Educators. Dr. Pearlman is also the co-founder and board member of the mental health non-profit DSMHW.org. His expertise is helping all children to succeed, challenging behaviors, trauma, school improvement, mental health, and self-care. Dr. Pearlman has presented to over 100,000 people in the past few years. He is regularly asked to provide keynote addresses, featured presentations, and trainings for state, regional and national organizations.

Diana Virgil, Ph.D., ACSC, of Alabama’s Daleville High School
Virgil has been a school counselor since 2015 and works on a campus that serves 346 students in grades 9–12. She is the 17th person to receive the national recognition and the first from Alabama. Virgil received her bachelor’s, master’s and educational specialist degrees from Mississippi College and a doctorate degree from University of the Cumberlands. She is an ASCA-Certified School Counselor, a National Certified School Counselor and a National Certified Counselor.
Many Daleville High School students are trailblazers in their families, aiming to be the first to graduate from high school. When Virgil was hired, she noticed a significant number of students weren’t participating in dual-enrollment classes due to a lack of awareness, limited college aspirations, transportation challenges and financial constraints. Virgil promptly established a partnership with the local community college to boost student enrollment. A significant turning point came when the college received a grant to provide eligible students with free tuition and books for dual enrollment, revolutionizing the opportunities for students to earn both high school and college credit. To address transportation challenges, Virgil worked with the college to implement online courses and enlisted teachers to teach dual enrollment courses at the high school. Her approaches increased the number of students in dual-enrollment courses from four to more than 40 each semester. This year, the school is on the cusp of graduating its first student with a high school diploma and an associate degree in science, along with its first student with a mechatronics certification from the aviation college. As a result of Virgil’s extensive collaboration and advocacy efforts, Daleville High School now offers dual-enrollment courses in science, English and math. For Virgil, the most rewarding part of her work as a school counselor is the opportunity to be a support system for her students.

Pre-Conference Learning Session

Comprehensive school counseling is a true show everyday for school counselors. How do we balance all three domains (SEL, academic, and CCR) while also ensuring students receive MTSS for tiers 1, 2 and 3? This session will show how to become the ringmaster of your counseling program by interweaving and balancing all three domains for direct services including large and small group, and individual counseling. Indirect service options will also be modeled on how school counselors can advocate for their students within each domain. The ASCA documents will be referenced to help school counselors at all levels (K-12) to proactively plan and be data-driven for their MTSS for tiers 1, 2 and 3 as part of their larger school and districtwide plan. All evidence-based strategies and tools will be easy to implement as school counselors return to their settings, so bring your popcorn to enjoy how to effectively implement the greatest show on earth!
Heather Bushelman has been in education for 22 years, with sixteen of that time spent as a school counselor. Most recently, she served as the Kentucky Department of Education’s Coordinator for Comprehensive School Counseling. As President of the Kentucky School Counselor Association, she advocates for school counseling around the state and nation. She was also honored to have been named the 2022 Kentucky School Counselor of the Year. Heather has presented nationally for conferences in Georgia, Nevada, Florida, California, Tennessee, Missouri, and Texas on topics including SEL Implementation within MTSS, Trauma-informed practices, building a comprehensive school counseling program, and college and career readiness. Her current role is serving as the MTSS Coordinator for the third largest district in Kentucky, Boone County Schools.

Are you feeling like your spinning plates when it comes to PBIS and behavior management? In this session attendees will explore Tier 1, 2 and 3 behavior management strategies for grades K-12. Take an in depth look at several Tier 1, 2 and 3 behavior interventions that are common among many schools/districts. Participants will leave the session with practical strategies that can be implemented quickly, and systems for measuring fidelity of the interventions.
With 25 years of experience in education, Gina Crabtree has served many roles. These include School Counseling, Special Education and District Behavior Coaching. Through these experiences, she has gained recognition as Kentucky’s School Counselor of the Year, and as a National School Counselor of the year semi-finalist. She has served on the board for the Kentucky School Counseling Association for 7 years and is currently serving as Past President. She is the author of the blog Mrs. Crabtree’s Counseling Corner. Through this work, she has been supporting teachers and school counselors across the nation for over a decade. Her passion lies with building capacity for teachers and School Counselors in order to support students with varying levels of behavioral needs. Her strategies for supporting students focus on understanding the whole child through relationship building, function based analysis, and brain science.

Circus acts and SEL have more in common than we might think. The courage it takes to catapult yourself in the air and do something magnificent is the same courage we need in the school environment. Using social-emotional learning with students and adults is a vital part of comprehensive school counseling. We know that SEL increases academic achievement, improves behavior and contributes to the overall sense of well-being for students and teachers. This engaging and interactive session will provide easy-to-implement SEL strategies that can be used in whole-group, small-group and individual settings. Strategies that can be used “in the moment” in addition to longer stand alone activities to support a variety of scenarios will be offered. Last but not least: because SEL starts with us, we will reflect and build upon your own personal SEL skills and practices in each of the five core competencies.
Allison Roeser, M.H.S.,PCC, is an education consultant, author and leadership coach. She holds a Master of Health Science (MHS) degree from Johns Hopkins University and Professional Coach Certification (PCC) from the International Coaching Federation. Ms. Roeser has almost two decades of experience working with leaders in education. Serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), a program that advocates for foster care youth in San Francisco, Allison is passionate about child welfare and social change. Previously, Allison served as Deputy Director at Westat, a research organization where she directed studies focused on health and education. Allison is co-author of the book Social Emotional Learning Starts with Us: Empowering Teachers to Support Students and is co-founder of SEL&Beyond, an organization dedicated to providing SEL professional development and coaching for educators, parents and students.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If we are forced to cancel the KSCA Conference because of a “force majeure” event, such as a government restriction on large gatherings that cover the intended size of the conference, then we will issue full refunds of the registrations. Otherwise, our normal cancellation policy will be upheld: There will be no refunds after August 11, 2024. All cancellations before August 11, 2024 will be refunded less a $25 handling fee. The conference is not responsible for and cannot give refunds due to problems beyond its control such as weather or school closings.
